10 Kitchen Remodel Ideas That Maximize Small Spaces

If you live in New Jersey, there's a good chance your kitchen isn't as big as you'd like it to be. Many NJ homes — especially older colonials, capes, and split-levels — have kitchens that were designed in an era when kitchens were just for cooking, not the gathering hub they are today. But a small kitchen doesn't mean you're stuck with a cramped, frustrating space. With the right design decisions, you can make a small kitchen feel significantly larger, work more efficiently, and look stunning.

Here are 10 kitchen remodel ideas we recommend for small spaces, based on our 18+ years of kitchen renovations throughout New Jersey.

1. Open Up the Layout

The single most impactful change you can make in a small kitchen is removing a wall to open it up to the adjacent dining or living area. Many NJ homes built in the 1960s–1990s have enclosed kitchens separated from the rest of the house by a wall that may or may not be load-bearing. Removing that wall (and adding a beam if it's structural) instantly creates an open-concept feel that makes the kitchen feel twice as big. Our framing team handles structural modifications like this regularly. It's one of the most requested changes we make.

2. Choose a Galley or L-Shaped Layout

For truly small kitchens where opening a wall isn't an option, a galley layout (two parallel walls of cabinets) or an L-shaped layout (cabinets along two adjacent walls) is the most efficient use of space. These layouts minimize wasted space and keep everything within arm's reach. A well-designed galley kitchen can be incredibly efficient for cooking — many professional restaurant kitchens use this layout for a reason.

3. Install Cabinets to the Ceiling

In a small kitchen, every inch counts. Standard upper cabinets leave a gap between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling — that's wasted storage space and it makes the ceiling feel lower. Installing cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling adds significant storage capacity and draws the eye upward, making the room feel taller. You can use the highest shelves for items you rarely need (seasonal dishes, special occasion serving pieces). Our millwork team can create custom cabinet solutions that maximize your specific space.

4. Use Light Colors

Dark cabinets and dark countertops can make a small kitchen feel cave-like. Light colors — white, light gray, soft blue, cream — reflect light and make the space feel larger and more airy. White or light-colored cabinets with a light quartz countertop is the most popular combination we install in small NJ kitchens. You can add warmth and character through hardware, lighting, and accent colors without darkening the space.

5. Add Under-Cabinet Lighting

Good lighting is essential in a small kitchen, and under-cabinet LED lighting is one of the most effective upgrades. It illuminates your countertop workspace (making the kitchen more functional), adds ambiance, and creates a sense of depth that makes the room feel larger. It's also a relatively inexpensive upgrade that delivers an outsized impact on the overall look and feel of the space. Our electrical team can wire these during your remodel.

6. Consider a Peninsula Instead of an Island

Islands are great, but they don't fit in every kitchen. If your kitchen is under 150 square feet, a full island can make the space feel cramped by restricting traffic flow. A peninsula — essentially an island that's attached to a wall or cabinet run on one side — gives you extra counter space, storage, and seating without requiring clearance on all four sides. You need about 36–42 inches of clearance around an island; with a peninsula, you only need clearance on two or three sides.

7. Choose Slim or Integrated Appliances

Standard appliances can overpower a small kitchen. Consider counter-depth refrigerators (which don't stick out past the counter), slim dishwashers (18 inches instead of 24), built-in microwaves (which free up counter space), and slide-in ranges (which create a more seamless, built-in look). Integrated panel-ready appliances that match your cabinetry can make the kitchen feel less cluttered and more streamlined.

8. Maximize Storage with Pull-Outs and Organizers

Small kitchens need smart storage. Pull-out drawers in lower cabinets (instead of deep shelves you have to dig through), lazy Susans in corner cabinets, pull-out spice racks, drawer organizers, and vertical tray dividers make every square inch of cabinet space usable. A well-organized small kitchen can actually hold more functional storage than a larger kitchen with poorly designed cabinets.

9. Use a Large-Format Backsplash

In a small kitchen, a busy backsplash with tiny tiles and lots of grout lines can make the space feel cluttered. Large-format tiles (like 4x12 subway tiles or 12x24 porcelain), a continuous quartz backsplash, or even a single slab of stone create a cleaner look with fewer visual interruptions. Fewer grout lines also means less maintenance. Our tiling specialists can help you choose the right tile size and pattern for your space.

10. Add Reflective Surfaces

Mirrored backsplashes, glass cabinet doors, glossy tile, and polished countertops all reflect light and create the illusion of more space. Even something as simple as replacing a few solid upper cabinet doors with glass-front doors can make the kitchen feel more open by adding visual depth. Pendant lights with reflective or glass shades add to this effect.

Bonus: The Open Shelf Trick

Replacing some upper cabinets with open shelving can make a small kitchen feel dramatically more open. Open shelves don't create the visual weight that closed cabinets do. The trade-off is that everything on the shelves is visible, so it works best if you're someone who keeps things tidy. A popular compromise: open shelves on one wall, closed cabinets on the other.
